Andy - Weekly Blog Report 1

At the first time I came back from AACE training to site, I just impress the training and how it affect on my schedule in regards of the numbers of homework , reading books and the paper are required to work. It is challenging as well as terribly training that I ever had and memorize me what I did in my academic which I left more than 10 years ago. It is good opportunity to work with people come from abroad which are located at different locations and culture environment as one team work.
Meanwhile, we as project control team start to working on project plan and create standard report format. Some communication through correspondence emails among project control team are developed intensively in this week to develop the plan and report that requires to refresh what have been learned in the AACE class through the slides presentation to bring some idea how to generate the plan and the report. The one that we are currently discussed on how total float will be calculated among project control plan. The way that previous class approached by using total free float (from my understanding)
which I believe is not appropriated to reflect how critical path of project affect the completion of overall project schedule.
I had kick of meeting this week with sponsor to overview 2010 year capital plan, the initiative to commence the activity of “front end loading” by PM to identify project scopes whether meet with projects objective. The meeting concludes that two projects (Mine development hills and New Maintenance Component Shop) are not clearly defined how run within the capital plan budget due to change of original scope.
One project (purchasing rock breaker) is not clearly whether it is still required due to the feasibility study is in completed. However, I am going to assist sponsor to develop the scope by creating project charter to ensure that all scopes and requirement meet with the objective of projects next week as well as to support smoothing process till the projects are executed. Also I’ll remind the sponsor that if the changed scope, preliminary design and feasibility study are not finished end of this year will affect the project will not be completed next year.
Looking at a project of mine hills development for +$3 M budget, I point out some critical issues for successfully project implementation on schedule such :
- Hydrogeology study require to develop prior mining hill adjacent the aquifer which is currently used by communities
- The overburden disposal dyke where located at mine active hills will be constructed once the mining hill is forecasted completely mined out on March 2010.
- A dedicated rock drill equipment is required to support rock blasting operation to construct the main haul road. Otherwise, the rock drill equipments which are currently operated to support mine production are limited to support for 2 -3 months duration of project. Otherwise, outsourcing option will not be efficiently for short duration contract as none contractors have the equipment on site. An opportunity to improve current physical availability of the equipment will be stretch plan to support this project. We have not yet resolve this issue The critical issues above have not included in the milestone of project by sponsor which is realized will affect project duration and budget. Otherwise, risk analysis by using root cause analysis (PEER) which is required to develop to identify all associated risk to complete the project on schedule and budget.
