Blog #1 from Lau

5 days of training in Jakarta was such a heavy session with lots of information transpired and knowledge taught during the training. This is only the beginning for the AACE journey for the next 6 months together with the team mate from the training from different industries. Ling Shen has warned me how heavy the course would be before I come for the training, but I kept telling him no matter how, I will give the best I can in this AACE journey.

Obviously, Paul's training and his enthusiasm in project management has open up the new learning horizon for me in project management, there are a lot of things to learn in project management and also other ways to analyze the project health theoretically and practically. At the beginning of the training, I was skeptical that the training will be a high level and theoretical training session mainly for AACE exams. Throughout the training, I was very particular with any real life experience that Paul has experienced throughout his life as PM and trainer, for eg. the project in Malaysia and also in Middle East where project management was not only applied on the ground level but almost entire organization in terms of operations as well as forecasting and purchasing of raw materials for the project deliveries.

Earned Value Management was one of the new project management techniques that I learned and found that it is helpful for project management and control. At this point, I only have a rough idea on EVM as "What did we get for what we paid"*, this needs practices along the way to acquire in depth knowledge on this topic.

PERT method for effort and cost/effort estimation with Best Case, Worst Case, Most Likely and calculate for the P90. This is not something new, I have learned this and even forgotten long time ago, however this was practically applied during the training.

There are also other topics which we have briefly discussed in the training such as PPP, purchasing power parity, in which I have shared this with a friend of mine who wants to cross check on relocation from one country to another country on what are things that need to be considered particularly.

WBS and project scheduling which is something draw my interest from the training that to my understanding that I still have a lot of work on this to deal with project manager on project plan, tracking and cost planning including risk analysis and contingencies.

For the next 6 months, there will be a lot of works to do. Individual commitment, conditional or unconditional contribution and support from each and everyone of is very important to ensure the success of the journey for the whole team. Individual commitment is where leadership is shown in the particular person disregard if the person is the PM for selected project or one of the team members. I am particular interested in leadership style that ensure project success as well as this journey. At the very high level, leadership style could be a topic that I would like to choose for my paper. But I still need to drill down further to a smaller scope for my paper in AACE.

Hi Lau,
I know it is early yet in the class, but the reason your company sent you to our course was because they want you to CHANGE some things in the company.

What I need you to do in these postings is to show me (and others) what lessons learned and how you are putting them to work. I am especially interested in the soft skills...... About leadership, communications, motivating others, mentoring others, working as a team, problem solving.....

So this is a good post for the first week, but I need to see a clear linking between what you are learning and what changes you propose implementing in your company.

BR,
Dr. PDG, Jakarta
