Nui's - 1st Blog
From Class to Work
- When I come back to work, I told my boss and my colleague this course gave me A BAG with 5 textbooks. I could not imagine how my life will be in next 6 months. It would kill my weekend and holiday. I recall my memory when I took my master degree. I have to working on my assignment till midnight every night. I have to read the book every morning on my bed before going to work. That’s what I could imagine. It‘s real nightmare!
- Beyond my complain, I also talk with my colleague what I learnt from the class (at least one) and share to him. I pick the one that I did not use, PERT method. I share with my colleague that it will be advantage for the company when we apply to project, especially in complex project. If we just put all estimation with the worst case in order to protect ourselves then we reserve a lot of unnecessary contingency with too much time and cost to the project. This would kill our company competitiveness when bidding. And we should not put contingency separately from the project budget. He was not crystal clear what I talking about but at least I can put some awareness to the organization and for sure I will continue to doing this.
- Another thing still stuck in my thought is Earned Value Management. After I learned from the class, it surprises me! Because what I understood is completely wrong from EVM concept. I interpret the Budget and Planned value (BCWS) from word itself. I think it was the Contractor’s (my company) plan cost and also the budget for the fund allows to use in the project. So when I implemented, I think only cost side. POC, I took it from when cost recognize and multiply to Earned Value. Now I know that it is real physical completion that I can invoice to customer which is more practical on work complete. I promise, I will re-explore EVM in my organization with the right concept.
Learning from ACCE Certificate Project
- Project plan: For estimating the duration for each activity with my previous work experiences. I will put the worst case in order to make myself safe when any unknown problem occurs. When Dr. Paul has observed that I did not apply PERT method, I have to turn back and put worst case, most likely and best case and calculate to get the P90. The concept and formula itself does not much hard to understand, I can go through it. What this thing can teach me? I think, I have to go out from the comfort zone and try something new that I learn from the class and observe whether it is good or bad. Then I could decide to use or not use it. Otherwise I will not learn anything and eventually worthless for myself and company.
- Teamwork: “Teamwork is a joint action by two or more people, in which each person contributes with different skills and express his or her individual interests and opinions to the unity and efficiency of the group in order to achieve common goals.” (Reference from Wikipedia)
From above meaning and from this project. We need team member to contribute their skill and experience to accomplish our ultimate goal to pass the AACE certification. I strongly agree with Dr.Paul that we need each other; no one can pass alone easily. At this stage I would say we are enter Storming stage which we are brainstorm and different idea flowing. Sometimes we are not agreed on other idea, I think we must express our opinion so other can understand quickly what we think rather than put some excuse or keep quiet, because this could waste the time and delay our project deliverable.
This is my really first blog. I never write this kind of wording even in my native language publicly. Hope this can make other understand what I trying to tell.

Hi Nui, I love this blog content. I've got a reminder on EVM, I'll set it in my priority learning sked.
Excellent posting, Nui!!! You did exactly what I am hoping to see from everyone each week.
You identified new tools and techniques you learned about (or learning more about old tools and techniques) and then you talked about how you plan on changing how you do your work based on what you are learning.
That is why you were sent to this course.... Because someone believed you are a good change agent and leader......
So keep up the good work and I look forward to reading next weeks postings...
