Nui's - 2nd Blog
- Teamwork Survey Result
From the teamwork survey, the result is indicates that we have no clear perception of the way our team operates, the team's performance is highly variable, or that you are in the storming phase (this phase can be extremely volatile with high and low points). - What we face in this stage
- Reality sets in: After we submitted the project plan last week, it is rejected with the optimistic and aggressive on project schedule and estimation. We have to review on billing rate, check on the critical path and also the risk analysis in term of monetary value which will become our contingency. This is what we skipped in project plan preparation last week. I think this is very practical to the real world, we have to consider the risk, time and quality to ensure that we won’t get loss or cut over skin for this project.
Moreover, we got additional assignment for teamwork survey and blog rule & score count. I am getting more task than what I expect. This such a real situation that everyone have in real life, too much task don’t know how to handle. I talk to myself, I have to setup my mind to be ready. Then I start to assign the work to the team base on what I perceive what they are good at. The result is go quite well, I can handle the task with good quality.
- Minimal progress toward goals: From the deliverable of past 2 weeks, I would say that we did not have much progress on our project. We could even not start the project because our project plan has rejected.
We still have issue on project communication tool such as blog, google group, workspace and skype. We fail to send our governance agreement to the client.
What we are doing? I ask myself (as project control role) I have to do everything, initiate everything in the project? Why program manager does not start to organize the team? - Strategy Apply?
- From the Dupont presentation, the strategies to use in this stage is Relationship-building and Consensus, Understanding and dealing with conflict and Resolving conflicts
- I read through detail of each strategy what I have done for the project control team is
Relationship-building and Consensus: We share our time constraint. We strongly focus to our task to achieve the goal (project plan/weekly report). We listen to each other feedback to fix our problem. This creates a lot of TRUST and RESPECT to the team.
- What I have to do more: Understanding and dealing with conflict and Resolving conflicts: Now we have to be more familiar with the conflict. We have to be open, listen to other comment/feedback. Link back to the common goal that we share. Use collaborative approach to solve the conflict. And it‘s very good recommendation that Attack the issue, not Attack to each other. - Leadership Style
I think leadership style for this stage should be able to lead the team to the common goal that we share. This could overcome the conflict from the team without destroy team relationship and emotional issues.
2. What I learn from course still able to apply to the job
In this week, my colleague is working on the cost estimating for the bidding new sales opportunity. What we discuss is about the service warranty that we provide to the same customer since very long time. And we never change any wording. We think that we may try to reduce the service warranty period that customer can accept. This can bring our cost a bit down.
And we also discuss in another topic on telecom product life cycle is getting shorter and shorter now. Why we don’t change the raw material to suit with this shorter equipment lifetime?
I think these topics are exactly what Paul taught in the class. The clause from customer requirement can be plus or minus to the contractor cost and push back to the owner. Now I learn, if we could change the clause to reduce our cost and price down that would become our competitiveness.
You identified a problem the team was having, you analyzed it, you came up with some recommendations and most importantly, you linked what you are learning in the class to your day to day working environment!!
Very well done!! Keep up the good work and looking forward to reading next weeks posting from you!!!
