Reference from P3M3 v2.0 Self Assessment page 5. This assessment can be used in many ways;
- To provide a basic introduction and overview of the scope of P3M3.
- To gauge the current level of the organization maturity in the term of portfolio, program and project.
- To gain an understanding of the key practices in effective portfolio, program and project management process.
- To identify the key practices that needs to be embedded within an organization for it to improve process capability and achieve the next Maturity level.
- To understand and improve an organization’s capability to manage its portfolio, program and project more effectively.
Below are my opinions of this self assessment;
- From the above objective item 1-3, I can achieve to gain the basic overview of P3M3 concept and also able to gauge my current level of the organization maturity in the term of portfolio, program and project. And it also gives advance benefit of which perspective that organization needs to be improved from objective item 4 and 5.
- It is good tool for self assessment. It allows the organization to assess by themselves with little time spend or we can very quick evaluation. And this is free and not requires the third party or consultancy firm to do it which can save a lot of money for the company. In the same time it is also give disadvantage to the company because the person who evaluate may gain optimism bias which will give less benefit for the organization in the further improvement.
- After the assessment, the assessor should give the feedback to the organization. So if the assessors are from top management team may over look the detail of process and could not give good feedback to the team. While if the assessors are from the working level also could look in more detail and fail to involve business operational excellence.
- The next step after evaluation and feedback is creating the improvement plan. The assessment team need to have sufficient competence in project/program/portfolio management in various perspectives and may acquire the best practices to be example to the organization. It can be very easy to fail on the improvement plan if the organization/assessment team does not have ultimate goal (maturity level) and commit to it.
- Measuring perspective: This assessment is measured in several perspectives in the term of portfolio/program/project. But it could not be enough because the project is running also base on the people or resources who work in the whole organization. So I suggest the organization should do the assessment including Human perspective which involves competence development, work environment, individual performance improvement and compensation & benefit. This perspective should not underestimate because if the firm cannot motivate the employee so the productivity may not reach the appropriate level and effect to project/program/portfolio outcome.
- The Re-Assessment should be run in regularly (yearly) basis in order to measure how good the organization has improved during the past year and may compare the maturity level of the organization year by year.

You too are falling into the trap set by the Client From Hell....... Why is it you are focusing on these ad hoc assignments while the team is behind schedule and under budget on your scheduled work?
This is known as Scope Creep and is the death of many projects...... This one included......
Now I suggest that you push back to your client from hell and tell him that you will only do ad hoc work AFTER your scheduled work is completed.....
